Šesto izdanje Split Format festivala otvorit ćemo izložbom finalista/kinja i proglašenjem pobjednika/ica međunarodnog fotografskog natječaja na temu GRANICE. Tema granica pritom je okosnica natječaja i izložbe, kao i cjelokupnog festivalskog programa – od radionica, predavanja i filmskih projekcija do edukativnih foto-safari šetnji i popratnih događanja, koja će iz različitih perspektiva promišljati pojam granice.

U najbanalnijem smislu, granice određuju prostor i označavaju mjesta razdvajanja. U širem smislu, granice mogu biti društvene, kulturne i osobne. Oblikuju naše odnose, osjećaj pripadnosti i iskustvo svijeta.

Jelena Matić, povjesničarka umjetnosti i kustosica ovogodišnjeg izdanja, Lucija Čibals, povjesničarka umjetnosti, Marin Margeta, fotograf i potpredsjednik Fotokluba Mostar te Mane Radmanović, vizualni umjetnik i dizajner, član kolektiva Belgrade.Raw.

[ENGLISH]

The sixth edition of the Split Format Festival will open with an exhibition of the finalists and the announcement of the winners of the international photography open call on the theme BOUNDARIES / BORDERS. The theme will underpin both the open call and the exhibition, as well as the entire festival programme – from workshops, talks and film screenings to educational photo-safari walks and accompanying events, exploring the concept of boundaries and borders from different perspectives. In the most basic sense, borders and boundaries define space and mark divisions. In a broader sense, boundaries can be social, cultural and personal. They shape our relationships, sense of belonging and experience of the world. We establish some boundaries ourselves, while others are determined by the circumstances in which we live. They can offer a sense of security, but also impose limitations, while crossing and shifting them creates opportunities for encounters, exchange and new experiences. In photography, the theme of boundaries also invites exploration of the medium itself, its possibilities and the ways it shapes our gaze. Photography can record reality, but also transform it, move towards abstraction or prompt a perceptual shift – a change in how we look at and understand what we see. Through the choice of perspective, the isolation of details or experimentation with photographic processes, everyday scenes can take on different meanings. As artificial intelligence becomes more widely used, the boundaries between the authentic and the artificial, and between the photographic record and computer-generated images, continue to shift. Reflecting on the boundaries of photography therefore also raises questions about what we recognise as photography today and how we understand its relationship to reality and artistic creation.

We invite all interested photographers – amateurs, professionals and enthusiasts – to explore and (re)interpret borders and boundaries through their work: spatial or social, personal or collective, visible or invisible, as well as the boundaries of the photographic medium itself. Boundaries we accept or question, borders that divide us or become meeting places, and limits whose shifting allows us to discover new ways of seeing and expressing ourselves through photography. The winners will be selected by an international expert jury comprising Jelena Matić, PhD, art historian and curator of this year’s edition; Lucija Čibals, art historian; Marin Margeta, photographer and vice-president of Photo Club Mostar; and Mane Radmanović, visual artist, designer and member of the Belgrade.Raw collective.

The BOUNDARIES / BORDERS photography open call is public and open to all professional and amateur photographers and photography enthusiasts from Croatia and abroad. Anyone who turned 18 before the publication of the open call is eligible to enter. Participants are free to interpret the theme, provided their work follows the central concept of the open call. Each photographer may submit an unlimited number of entries. Each entry must include 10–15 photographs conceptually related to the theme of this year’s festival. Art historian Jelena Matić is the curator of this year’s festival. An entry fee of €30.00 is payable for each submission (€20.00 for members of Photo Club ‘Split’). Photographs must have been taken in 2021 or later. Both colour and black-and-white photographs are accepted. Photographs must not contain signatures, watermarks or borders. Photographs created using artificial intelligence or any other graphics tool may not be submitted. Each entry must also include a short description.
